Ok, go easy on me, as I am a total newb, and these are my first chicks. . . That being said, I have an extremely loving 4 wk old Wyandotte (I think, avatar) that has recently been open mouth breathing.
Pepper has been open mouth breathing for about a week now. I first noticed that she would open her mouth wide, like a yawn, but very often, so not much like a yawn in that regard. over the last few days it has been more noticeable, and last night while the three chicks were perching on my arm, Pepper would consistenly stretch out her neck while breathing with her mouth open. Today upon arriving home from work she is still doing this and I noticed that she has sneezed a several times this week.
Details.
I live in New Mexico, the humidity is very low, and heat is getting high. My brooder temp is probably a bit high (upper 80's) as the temps here are getting up there.
I have taken her out to play in the dirt about three times now, and the last two, she has treated herself to dirtbaths (mites?)
She is a good eater and drinker
She is very active.
I put a tsp of ACV in her water (1qt) and she is on chick starter (untreated, I believe)
Her eyes are clear and not runny
Her nostrils seem clean and also not runny.
I have not tried to pry open her mouth to look for gapeworm, yet, and my wife is convinced we need to give her colloidal silver, but I would like to make an informed decision before giving her "stuff," especially if she is just hot.
I definitely do not want to lose this very loving bird and I want her to have a good life, so any input from the pros would be greatly appreciated.Th
Thanks
