A dream of mine to have chickens and goats. I am in New Jersey and bought some land in Maryland for retirement so in 4 years will be moving to start my homestead. I have been reading all i can on chickens and visiting shows when possible. For now i want to start a small (4/6) coop in my back yard and get acquainted with the ups and downs. I have a fenced acre back yard so it should do nicely. For starters i am thinking Jersey Giants and Easters. Mostly looking for a few eggs and pets.
Sorry i am rambling here. Any experience with NJ laws in keeping chickens will be greatly appreciated.

Laws depend upon the municipality. Go to your town hall and ask about restrictions on keeping poultry. Good luck.

Please do check for legality first. Lots of folks try having "stealth" chickens but, there is always at least one neighbor eager to turn them in.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Definitely check out the laws first before jumping in too deeply. Jersey Giants are a wonderful breed to keep. Very docile and friendly birds. Good layers too. I keep the smaller Black Australorps and they are just as friendly and fun to have around.

I used to keep Pygmy goats many years ago. Wow, what a riot they are! LOL Goats are so entertaining. But they will eat EVERYTHING....and not like tin cans and such, LOL, but anything wood like your barn, your trees, your flowers, any veggies in the garden, all your grass, pretty much anything growing in their area will be gone in no time. They are excellent climbers and will climb your trees. LOL

Make yourself at home here and we do welcome you to our flock!
