Greetings All:
i'm the new guy from Williams, AZ, and believe it or not, i just did find this site (shame, shame). don't know how i missed it all this time. what a great huge wealth of information here!!!
i keep only Wyandottes (not stodgy, or opinionated, just what i started with) and try to keep 20 or so. a little hard, as in the last couple of years, Mr. Coyote has moved in with all his expanded family...and even though i only allow my flock to free range when i'm home and outside, i still have an accident or two. well, maybe that isn't entirely true...i had 8 last year, all in about three months, and then i started to keep the .22 handy. got tired of seeing coyotes running down my drive with a hen in their mugs!
last winter, i had Mr. Bobcat living in my storage shed right next to the hen house...and didn't even know it, until i followed his tracks right up to the way he was getting in. luckily, he found his way into the coop only once before i changed the locks and threw him out in the dead of winter.
anyway, i sell eggs and do not butcher much, other than surplus roosters for meat. i replenish to the right number every year, either incubating, or at the Feed Store, to replace the ones i lost.
occaisionally, i raise six or so turkeys for butcher, and i think this may be a good year!!!
nice to meet you!
rick
