I have been reading a lot and have a few friends to help me. Our coop is almost done and we have borrowed a brooder from a friend. We scrubbed the brooder with clorox and rinsed it really well. It has been sitting to dry for days and my chicks are on their way! The were vaccinated for Marek's Disease at the hatchery. I have medicare food and a waterer ready for their arrival. Other than keeping the chicks fed, watered, warm, and the brooder dry what other advice can anyone give me? Thanks in advance!

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Congrats on the soon to be new chicks! I hope they arrive safely to you. When you get them home, before you allow them to eat anything, dip everybody's beaks in the water and make sure they are well hydrated before eating. Withhold food for 15 mins or so. Dehydration is the leading cause of pasty butt in chicks. Along with the stress of shipping, over heating to chilling. So get water into them first before any food.

Enjoy your new babies! If you have any questions about them, feel free to ask around the forums. Welcome to our flock!

If you are getting "day olds," or other young'uns - please give them water in a shallow dish with clean stones or glass marbles/pebbles in it. To prevent them from falling forward and drowning (yes, it happens!!)
