Gosling hatched yesterday and his left foot is turned under - facing his rear. The other foot is fine. If I bring his foot forward it opens on my finger like the other foot does so it doesn't seem to be deformed. I've read about splints for feet sprawled out but not about tucked under. Please help -- this little guy has been through a lot and I want to make sure I do everything I can to ensure his safety and health. Idiot neighbor put eggs at my front door because mom built her nest in his boat -- I placed them back near the area and she refused to return. Had 6 eggs - it was obvious that 4 were not fertilized - this guy hatched yesterday and the other was dead (tears!) any info will be so much appreciated.

This site has info on leg and feet problems dif make a shoe using car board or plastic and vet wrap to hold the foot in proper position. https://sites.google.com/a/poultrypedia.com/poultrypedia/poultry-podiatry I'd wrap the shoe to protect the foot from any rough edges and then attache the shoe to the foot with vet wrap. Hope the gosling makes full recovery

Thank you so much for the reply!! I will try your suggestion and hope for the best. I'll let you know how things turn out. How long should I leave it on? And how often should I replace it?

I'd go for at least 3 days to start remove the shoe and see how it looks if still not correct put the shoe back on. Also start your gosling on Brewers yeast mixed into the feed if your using chick starter it doesn't have the amount of niacin water fowl need for strong legs. 1 Tab to 1 cup of feed. When you put the shoe on does it have strength in the ankle to stand on it's leg. You want to make sure this isn't a defect also so check the leg and foot to make sure it feels just like the other one.

Be sure when wrapping with the vet tape you don't wrap too tight and cut off circulation.

He can put his foot forward like the other one but he typically walks on the top -- like us walking on tip toes - he doesn't walk on it flat. He does seem to have the strength in his ankle to keep it forward while standing but tip toes on that foot when walking.

Going to call an exotic vet (my husband should have been a vet instead of an orthodontist!) and see about taking him in.

Very good idea if you have one close most of us don't have that luxury. please keep us updated.

Took Lou or Lucy to my regular vet and they so kindly put a splint on and it was MUCH better than my attempt at a splint; he/she is doing great!! Thank you so much for your help. I am so relieved that he will be able to walk normally. I knew that it would (should) be an easy fix if done correctly and my Vet was able to get some waterfowl experience!!)
