Newbie chicken mom from N Fl

Good morning everyone! I have six chicks and I am almost done with the build on my coop. I saw this discussion board because I was looking for what to use as lime for the coop and the run. Ultimately, I believe I have decided on barn lime with DE. I can’t really afford the other. What do you think?
I would also like to join in other discussions as well and learn from others that are more experienced.
Welcome to BYC! In regards to barn lime or de. I generally use a little de in the coup not tons of it but a little. If you are after odor control the best way to deal with it is to use poop boards under the roosts and remove it daily. I use pine shavings in my run and coup. As far as the run (odor control) I have used sweet pdz with some success but, it is expensive! I am using a little barn lime now so far not bad. I do pick up poops from the run a couple times a day. Even with all of this work I feel run bedding needs to be changed every month to month and a half. In humid weather maybe more often. No easy answer unfortunately. I have come to the conclusion it just has to be changed on a regular basis.

If you're concerned about odors, have you ever thought of horse bedding pellets in the coop? We're going on about 9 years now with those and always odor-free. No maintenance other than when they molt, we use a leaf blower, and change the pellets out in the spring.
