newbie egg laying ?

well i finally got 1 egg. i left them in the coop/run yesterday morning when i went to cut hay. got back around lunch and went to let them out and finally a small brown egg, and it was in one of the nest boxes. hopefully they're finally starting.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!! I still have only 2 out of my 15 laying. My one SLW that was the first to lay is getting more reg, but still small eggs. That's great that it was in the nest box. My SLW will lay in her favorite box, but the RIR that just started laying, likes to lay on top of the nest box.....crazy chicken! Oh well, at least it's in the coop and not hidden.

I had one hen who insisted on laying on top of the nesting boxes, too. Being it was just out there in the open, the other chickens started eating them if I didn't get there first. I tried to train her to lay elsewhere by putting stuff on top of the box, but she would just push it off and lay, then the other hens would eat the egg. Solved the problem by building another box and putting it on top of the others right where she laid. She still lays there, but because it's now somewhat protected, the others leave the egg alone. I wonder who's training whom? LOL!
