Hi everyone!

I am a complete newbie to the chicken world. Have never raised chickens before but I want to get a backyard flock to make my lifestyle more sustainable :) I am having some issues with getting a coop. They are either too expensive pre-built or the manuals that are being sold online require intensive labor and also a lot of money. I found a good looking one on ebay but am wondering how many hens you think the coop can hold? I am hoping to have 4 chickens tops so I don't really need room to grow but I dont want to get anything to small. Any help would be appreciated! Below are the dimensions to the coop & run I am looking at. Thanks so much!

Heather

  • Run Length: 47 inches
  • Run Width: 35.5 inches
  • Run Height: 42.5 inches (Ground to Roof Peak)
  • Nesting Box Opening Height: 17.5 inches
  • Nesting Box Back Height: 15.5 inches
  • Nesting Box Width: 25 inches
  • Nesting Box Length: 13 inches
  • Coop Length: 37 inches
  • Coop Width: 35 inches
  • Coop Height: 57 inches (Ground to Roof Peak)

I am no good at numbers but the usual advice is 4 sg.feet space per chicken inside the coop and 10 square feet in the outdoor run. Have you tried the local craigs lists for a coop. They often have used or barely used coops at good prices if you are able to load them up and get them home.

That coop you are looking at sounds a bit small. You won't get very far with that, especially when you get to the need-more-chickens stage :-) Do as DD suggested and have a look on CL for a secondhand bargain. Or even some free or cheap materials you can use to build your own coop.

Diva's dimensions are correct, 4 square feet of coop and 10 square feet of run space per bird (floor space, that is). The coop is around 9 square feet, the run about 12, pretty small for 4 birds.
