I've been reading books about chickens and have haunted the BYC forums for a couple of months. We've never had chickens but my husband is finally convinced that It Is A Good (or at least, OK) Idea, and today I ordered five different chicks: RIR, Black Australorp, Buff Orp, Barred Rock and Silver Laced Wyandotte. I couldn't decide between the various breeds so I ordered one of each and now I'm wondering if that was a good idea -- will birds in a mixed flock get along? Friends with chickens have told me that birds of a feather indeed flock together.

On Monday I'm picking up a brooder that we're borrowing from a friend so I have time to get it cleaned and aired out before the chicks arrive on Thurs. So excited!

They'll all get along fine. Bantums and standards raised together usually have no problems, even with the size difference.

They will be fine. We have 8 different breeds that all live together and are just fine with one another.

Congrats on your new endeavor! You will enjoy the chickens, I am sure!

Thanks for the welcome, everyone! I'm especially glad to hear from those with mixed flocks that get along -- very heartening!

Bought a few supplies today to get my brooder ready for Thursday.
