Hello all, just finished my coop and got my first 4 chickens. 8x8 coop with a 30x20 run. My wife and kids think I am crazy because thats all I have been talking about for about two months since I started this adventure. I started with 6 chickens two days ago and apparently my chocolate lab likes chicken as well.

!! One quick question, I'm sure there will be plenty more...I am using wood chips from by buddy who is a tree trimmer inside my coop that he mulches up after a tree job....Good or bad? Its free but the piles of mulch he has does sit out for month getting wet and starting to compost.

Welcome

Good luck with your dog. i have just started the process of training my Aussie since she hurt one of my hens a week ago. there are plenty of people here who are telling me it is possible with any kind of dog, so i'm going to trust them on it.

as for bedding, like Kourtnie i use pine shavings and the only problem i can foresee with wood chips is the mold. if you can figure out a way to prevent that i don't think it would be a problem, but mold can be a serious problem sometimes.

good luck and hopefully you can find answers to all of your questions here. there are a lot of very knowledgeable people here

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan

Wood shavings used for bedding are from dried wood. Fresh or old but moist wood chips could be used outside, but not inside your coop. Sawdust is too fine and dusty for bedding.

! Pleased to have you aboard! I agree with the above - I'd be worried about mold, etc, in damp wood.
