Good evening peeps...lol

I, like many are brand new. So new that I haven't even received my chicks yet. They are due at the end of this month! I have a good friend that has been sharing info with me, but I hate to bother her ALL the time with my ramblings and questions. So on that note~

I live on 1.35 acres of desert! I have been here for 10 years and the land has trees and shade in the social area. I am getting Red Sex Links. At first I was thinking 10, but now wondering if I should do 6-8 instead. I have a used coop that is 4' wide x 6' deep I believe.

The plan was to let them free range, but I have a deaf dog that I fear may "play" with them to death. After reading some of the thread, I am still mixed about that thought. Though I so plan on introducing them from the beginning, I am making plans to make an enclosed run for when I am not home. Not only for the pup but for the various raptors we have here.

SOOOO..... Tomorrow I plan on spending the day "fixing" and "finishing". I do realize that I need to bring the nest boxes up. Should I make another step up to the roosts?

I am working with recycled material meaning pallets and such. I don't have much more than that right now. Sorry for not being more descriptive and naive about this subject. Baby steps right? I hope to learn from all of you and make the knowledge me friendly.....lol

Hello and welcome to BYC

If you are concerned about predators you can attach a covered run to your coop. Have a look in the Coops section here for ideas. Your coop looks like it could take 6-8 hens and for them you will only need 2 nest boxes. Enjoy your chicken adventure and feel free to ask any questions you may have. We're here to help each other.

Hmmm, I guess it won't let me put photos up here anymore!!

Hello From Tucson!!

I keep my chickens in a covered run. We have many hawks in the neighborhood.

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan - figure out how much floor space you have (you can't count areas with nest boxes, waterers, etc) and figure for 4 square feet of floor space per bird. A 4X6 coop should handle at the most 6 hens, less if you have floor space taken away for other stuff. Outdoor run space should be 10 square feet per bird.
