Hi everyone, I'm Marci, currently living in New Mexico. My husband is active duty military so we've lived in quite a few states and in Okinawa, Japan. We have 5 kids.
We've had our chickens just over a year now. They're our first. We started out with 6; 3 Red Stars and 3 "Ameracaunas" but after reading some of the threads here, I really think they're Easter Eggers. One lays blue eggs, one lays blue-green eggs and one lays tan eggs.
One of our Red Stars, Nugget, was a bit too adventurous and squeezed through a tiny hole in the fence and wandered away. A coyote got her. :-( She was our favorite, too. She used to sit at the back door, looking into the house, kind of like a dog. Since then, someone gave us a black chick named Peep. I think she's an Australorp but I'm not 100% sure. The lady who gave her to us had a grandson who won her on Easter at church and got tired of her. It took a lot of work, but Peep is accepted by the other girls most of the time. When it comes to food and water, though, they're not so accepting but she stays out of their way. Poor baby. She's almost full grown now, though, so she'll be able to give them heck pretty soon.
Our other chickens are Twinkie and Yakitori (Red Stars), and Teriyaki, Princess Laya, and Chalupa (Easter Eggers, I guess?). They're very much our pets. Chalupa is the sweetest one and lets my kids pick her up, hold her, etc. She also felt maternal towards Peep and would protect her from the others when she first got here.
I'm glad to find this forum! I could talk about my "babies" all day.
They're so entertaining but I wish they wouldn't poop so much! LOL
