Welcome to BYC from San Diego!
I grew up in O.C. and not only did my dad have backyard chickens in the 50's- 60's, I had them in the early 80's in Newport Beach! We built a tree fort for our young sons at the time, and had the coop under it- we had a few raised eyebrows back then, but for the most part no one ever cared. It seemed normal for people to have a few hens in their backyards-hopefully it will be that way again soon
