Hello! As the title stated, I'm a new member here. I'm also new to chickens. In fact, I haven't gotten them yet.
I live in the northwest corner of Jefferson County MO.
i have wanted to raise chickens and goats for a few years now. My wife is dead set Gainst gots, but finally agreed to chickens. So, we decided that our three kids 9,6 and 17 months would love to get 6 chickens on Easter morning.
So, after much research and lurking here, I decided to buy 6 black sex linked chicks. My plan is to get the equipment in the next couple days. Then buy the chickens Saturday afternoon and keep them hidden in the house until Sunday morning.
My initial plan for raisin chickens was for primarily egg production. Followed by meat. But, I see a serious problem with buying my kids chickens as an Easter present, then slaughter them. So, I now plan on starting with the first six for the kids, then adding to the flock to raise meat birds. This may imply be justification to get more birds, I don't know yet. But it may work for convincing my wife to get more birds!!!!
