Hi Everyone. I'm a newbie from South Jersey. I have 6x 2 week old white leghorns. My home consists of myself, hubby, two young sons (ages 8 & 2), my sister and neice (age 4). We have over 3 acres of land and only an alpha beta fish to call a pet. We recently took the kids to see the Easter Bunny at a local garden center and we had to pass the chicks first. My sister and the kids freaked over them. I'm the researcher in the family and tried to talk some sense into everyone. My husband was also later involved and agreed. I was the only one who said no and now I'm in love! It wasn't very hard to do!

The chicks are growing fast and I've read many things on the topic of raising chickens over the last week. I downloaded the free my pet chicken guide to chicken care and it was truly an easy and informative read for a newbie like me! http://www.mypetchicken.com/backyard-chickens/chicken-care/guide-toc.aspx I made my husband and sister read it as well.

We have selected to build The Garden Coop http://www.thegardencoop.com/ We are not big DIYers but the instructions are very simple so we are giving it a go!

I may have millions of questions but my biggest so far is when should I expect to determine any roosters of the bunch? From the crow I presume?

Thanks!
Tiffany

That's right. You really don't know till it lays, or it crows. Sometimes you get surprised even then - in a flock with no roosters, the top hen usually takes over the job and some do crow.

Welcome to BYC!!

Thanks everyone for the well wishes! I'm really enjoying the chicks right now! I'm handling them as much as possible and am finding they really enjoy their combs and wattles rubbed. Love my babies! Thanks again!
