I was looking at the different forum topics but didn't see a topic for the "new to chickens and have no clue where to begin" people. I have 5 acres with a garden, and various fruit trees/vines. I have 2 little girls (3 and 5 yrs) and I think they would have a lot of fun with a few chickens. I know nothing about chickens, breeds, laying chickens, or anything else that has to do with chickens. I have been looking at types/designs of coups, and I can get the coup built, but not sure about size b/c I don't really know how many chickens I want/need etc. Would welcome any help or advice.
Thanks,
Jim

From South Georgia. You came to the right place. I do know that my 4 year old son loves to play with our chickens they should enjoy them too. If you have any questions just ask.

ETA: If you would like to know some really kid friendly chicken breeds I would recommend cochins, silkies, and most bantams.

Hey Jim, I'm in Laurel, MS. We just got our first four chicks, Dominiques, and they are wonderfully gentle with my 5-year old daughter. They're supposedly great layers. We'll see in a few months, I guess.
