Hi my name is melissa and after lurking for a couple of weeks, taking in all of this wonderful information that people have posted I decided to join. I have wondered about getting chickens for a while now and have had many people in my life discourage it (they smell, you don't know what you are getting yourself into, and that they are expensive to keep), but I would like to become more self sufficent (provide good healthy eggs for my family) and on top of that I love animals sooo much. After reading horrible stories of how chickens are treated even organic ones I was pushed over the edge... we are in the planning stages for our coop, I don't have any chicks yet

but will get them before the year is up.

If you have too many chickens in a small space they are stinky. If you have large enough run or a chicken tractor you move often they are not stinky.

Chickens are great!! The smell really isn't that bad. Like they sad just make sure your space is big enough. My hens let me pick them up they eat out of my hands and everything!! They are definitely worth it. They are also fun to watch!

The smell kinda grows on you!(JK)

If you keep things clean and do not over crowd the smell is not so bad! Don't worry about people thinking you're crazy.... Aren't we all???

Plus when you get you fresh eggs, I bet they will want some too!!

I don't notice a smell, & expensive? Other than the coop I think they're pretty cheep.

from PA! Get the chicks now, then build the coop. It'll keep you motivated and your chicks will be well grown and feathered for those Vermont winters! Good luck to you!
