Hi everyone!

My name is Heidi and I reside in Wyoming (USA)

Here is my sample intro thingy...

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? Yes I am brand spanking new to chickens! I have never owned a chicken.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? - Zero, I am doing my research right now and this looked like a good place to learn.

(3) What breeds do you have?
Imaginary chickens that reside in my mind only. LOL
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Google, my addiction and the search engine that keeps me up till all hours of the day and night.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? My biggest hobby is couponing and saving money. Other hobbies include reading, Googling, crosstich and knitting (in the winter), organic gardening, and spending time with friends and family.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I am happily married to my high school sweetie, Russ and together we have 5 children (one whom has flown the coop already), ages are 18, 12, 6 and twins who are 4. We have 2 dogs (A Rat Terrier - ShayShay and a Sheltie - Holly) and three cats (Isabelle, Shaggy, And Happy). We recently lost our beloved 12 year old Siberian Huskey - Chicky). I am a work at home mom and am the owner of a large online community based on teaching others to coupon shop and find deals as well as a large, but a bit smaller community based on organic foods and deals and coupons.

I am here to basically learn what I can about raising chickens and if it is legal or not in the city that I live in.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome! Right now I am focusing on housing. What type and size we should get as that seems that it will be our biggest upfront expense in keeping chickens. While my DH can put together a kit with instructions he is not much one for building from scratch. So we are going to probably end up with something from a kit or pre-built. I like the Eglu Cube a lot but not sure how it will hold up in our Wyoming winters.

After we setting on housing I guess we will look into the chickens and feed. I want to raise our chickens organically but not sure what options I have for local feed. So will be researching that as well. This site is a wealth of information!

I do have a few questions however that perhaps someone can help me with. I am debating on weather to get full grown chickens or baby chicks. What are the pro's and con's of each? What is the average life span of a chicken and for how long do they lay eggs?
