I am so excited. Our RIR has started laying. I can't wait for Barred rock to lay. My question is how do you store/clean your eggs?

Any and all info is greatly appreciated........

unless there is poop on them just leave the eggs (or so i was told) they have a protective coating on them.
storing gather up some eggcartons - date them for the week and put them in your fridge if you have to many they make wonderful gifts to family and friends or sell the excess ones. or if you have a cold room in your house use that for storage. Eggs last a very long time before they even hit the store they are usually 6 weeks old.

I read the book, Keep Chickens! by Barbara Kilarski. According to it, you can wipe with dry paper towel, if necessary wash, but remember egg has protective coating that is water soluble. I don't remember if there is anything in the learning center?? Did you go to search? We 4 RIR's and 3 BR's. LOVE their personalities, super friendly, wonderful dispositions. Congrats on your egg. How exciting

Our girls are a few days short of 18 weeks, so we're just kinda hangin out and watching their interesting antics.

If you need additional info let me know and I'll get our book out..

I use a dry micro fiber wash cloth. It works great. It is now the "egg cloth" exclusively.

I don't wash, either. But if you do get a poopy egg, or for some reason feel the need, just one caveat: wash them in water that is warmer than the egg. This causes any bacteria to migrate outward from the egg, rather than inward.

Oh Poo! I have always taken a damp paper towel to yucky eggs, then put them in the fridge and never had a problem.

I guess it's time to raid my husbands tool box for fine grade sandpaper!

If you wash your eggs you must refrigerate them. Unwashed eggs can be left on the counter for a couple of weeks. I don't wash mine and keep them on my egg counter for a couple of weeks before I refrigerate them. I have never had a bad egg. There is a good article by Mother Earth news on storing eggs. In the article it said they left them out for 90 days and they were still good. If the eggs are fertile then you should refrigerate them right away.

Here's the Mother Earth News link.
