My little buff op has decided to go broody. She is serious this time. She has to be removed from the nest box in order to eat, drink, and poop! Ive stolen the eggs from her for 2 days now and got to thinking tonight.....why?! Let her try her hand, afterall i wanted babies. So the question is are the eggs placed under Miss Broody that have been exposed to approx 28*f-30*f for approx 6hrs, going to do anything or have I wasted our time?(yes they are fertile...Dumplin is quite serious about his duties!

) Sorry if this is a redundant silly question but inquiring minds want to know...plus I dont want to waste any good tasting eggs! Thanks and stay warm!

As I said, im new and awaiting the newbie tutorial on how to use all the features on this board. Did I post this on the wrong subject? should it have been on egglaying and behavior? If so, how do I move it inorder to get an answer?

I really did take a shower today!
Why wont anyone answer?

Im still a newbie at this two but I would still give it a go...The worst that can happen is that they do not hatch...Hope someone with more knowledge chimes in soon. Good luck ^^

I don't think those eggs will work. Being exposed to those temps would freeze the egg and kill off any fertile cells. If you have any other fertile eggs which have been kept t a decent temp try those. I hope all goes well!

My thread Nasty Nesty Nellie had similiar circumstances as yours. I took pity on her and gave Nellie a few eggs from other hens. She sat the full period on 9 eggs and we had four cuties hatch (photos in thread) and two babies who died during hatch...may have been too cool. Only two eggs were bad...one of those exploded. I know that adds up to only eight eggs...I never did find egg nine.

Temperatures outside were freezing, but heat lamps in the hen house kept the temps between 40 and 60 degrees.

I moved Nellie and her nest of eggs into a pen a week before hatch and gave her additional lights (a 100 watt and a 60 watt)
Babies and Nellie are fine.

Good luck to you.

I hatched some a year ago in a bator and had both fresh and a few I pulled out of the fridge. I let them go to room temp and marked them with a F so I knew they were from the fridge. I really am not sure how long they were in there could have been up to a week or more. Due to human error (new to hatching and new bator) had a not good hatch. However one of the ones that did hatch was one of the fridge eggs. So I would say it is not impossible, may not be the ideal storage but they could still hatch. I would try it and see.

Thanks for answering!

I've put some other eggs (freshly laid) under her all with different dates 2/10-2/11-2/12...we will see what happens! I am going to try not to worry (yea right!) and let nature take it's course...I got a bad habit of screwing things up out of kindness....Im going to let Hilde take care of it! I'll let you know what happens! Stay warm!
