The reason for the 20 post rule, is some time ago we were hit badly by spammers, - they still pop up from time to time but, the new rules have reduced it to minimal annoyance.
Do you have feed stores in your area? They are a common source for chicks. Your local craig's list may have some ads for them. If you go to "Where am I, where are you?" you can locate & post on your state thread. You will probably find people in your locale. "An hour south of Chicago" is vague. If you mention some nearby towns it would help a lot.
It's very easy to acquire 20 posts. Look at some of the threads and add your comments like "Beautiful chicks," or "nice looking coop," it adds up fast. Meanwhile you can look at the Buy,sell,trade forum and get a feel for it. There is even a section for animals needing homes - for free.
BYC lists sponsors who have hatcheries. This time of year a lot of popular breeds may be sold out for a few months - others may be in surplus. You have to contact them to find out. If your effort is aimed at the right sources you will connect with what you need.
There are many breed threads on here - put the Breed name in the search box for instance " Rhode Island Red thread" and see what comes up.
