I have sent a direct email and loive in the same little city offering to let this person visit my coop, see how we do it, and to try and and answer any questions I can. Additionally I remember how daunting a jump it felt like when we started and can sympathize.

Hey there! I'm in Plant City too!

I haven't had a bit of trouble out of my small flock, once I got them established and stopped picking rooster after rooster when they are chicks LOL. It's really a breeze. Keep a clean coop, clean water and a safe environment and that is over half the battle. I would never trade my free range eggs for store bought.....ever. This board will be your best friend when you first start out. There is a wealth of information and every single thing that can happen, probably has....and has been posted about.

I would recommend you not read the emergency section unless you need it.

For the most part, the raising of chickens is easy and not traumatic save the occasional predator. Keep the chickens coop clean, water clean, is helpful.

And remember - that chickens are like potato chips,
a few are never enough!

I too am a newbie to this forum, but have seen a lot of helpful information and very nice folks.
I was a little hesitant about getting my feet wet, but I work with a very nice lady that helped me get started with 5 Barred Rock ( one of her hens took care of the day old chicks until they were ready to be on their own and come home with me). They have been a lot of fun thus far, to take care of and learn their each unique personalities. And the eggs they produce are delicious. I had forgotten how tasty fresh farm eggs can be. I am now ready to purchase more layers, and try my luck at some for meat.
