I grew up in the city and have always wanted to be a country girl. I have the kids, dog, cat and have added 5 chickens to our family. We have had them since last September. Fun and entertaining - they bring us laughs and joy, not to mention amazing eggs. But I have one that is sick and we are desperately trying to save her.
8 month old Barred Rock beauty. She has lost weight, lethargic, tail feathers down, self isolates when out, comb pale and further fallen than her normal. Is attempting to eat and drink - but tohow much she gets I just do not know. I thought she was egg bound - felt her and slacked her bottom - nothing there. Then we noticed her poop was 100% liquid. First dark brown. Have her liquid probiotic with a dropper and now still liquid but went to white and now is yellow.
I made all the girls a treat today garlic oatmeal with spinach and apple. She pecked at it a little and left it. After an hour with it I let the other hens in to finish it. I was surprised to see her keep her pecking order. I don’t know if it’s a good sign or not. Any thoughts on what I’m dealing with or what to try next?

Sorry about your hen. How long has she been acting sick? Can hou collect some droppings to have a local vet check them for worms or coccidiosis? It is hard to diagnose a sick chicken without ruling out some things. Has she ever laid eggs, and has she laid recently? Were they normal with hard shells? Can you feel her crop to see if it is empty and flat, or full, hard, or puffy?

If you can get some pictures of her and her poop, that might be helpful. I would try to give her some Poultry NutriDrench or other electrolytes with vitamins. PND can be given orally 2 ml per day for a quick boost. Try to get her drinking some. Scrambled egg bits are sometimes a good treat to offer, and some wet feed and water made into a mash.

She might be suffering a reproductive disorder or infection, or she might have enteritis, an intestinal infection. The more info we have, and to rule out coccidiosis would help.

Yes, sorry great questions! She is about 8 months old. We have 5 hens and we were getting 5 eggs a day - assumption that she was laying. We had only 2 eggs with soft shells - which hen(s) they can from, I am unsure. Her comb has always flopped over.
Last Sunday we trimmed one wing.

Monday is when she began to look as if something was wrong. I thought she was perhaps egg bound, so I soaked her in Epsom salt felt around nothing. Pic 1 & 2

Wednesday we tried isolating her, but she had the energy to escape each time. That’s when I noticed her (pardon the description) Hersey chocolate syrup poop. Pic 3

Thursday and Friday gave her probiotics with a syringe. Pic 4

Saturday tried to give her vitamins and electrolytes - but she would regurgitate it. So I stopped. Poop was white liquid

Today - Sunday poop is yellow liquid (I could only get a photo of the yellow on her feathers Pic5). She sat at the feeder off and on for over on hour. She attempted to eat the garlic oatmeal with spinach and apple but after 3 or so pecks she walked away and laid down.

I just felt her crop - feels empty. She feels swollen in the area below her vent PIc 5

Also She was vaccinated before we got her as a pullet. I was told that she couldn’t have the coccidiosis since she had been vaccinated.

Question - you said 2ml a day. We were giving her 2ml up to 10 every hour when she was taking it on Friday.

The liquid brown stool looks pretty abnormal. Did she possibly drink any of the Epsom salt water during the soak? I would guess that she may have been the one who was laying the shell-less eggs, and may be suffering from impacted oviduct, which can be from salpingitis, which can have many possible causes. I might try some calcium with vitamin D tablets 1/2 tablet daily for several days. Baytril (enrofloxacin) is an antibiotic that is banned for chickens, but can be helpful to treat early reproductive infections. Jedds.com online sells the 10% liquid, and some vets may still prescribe it if you don’t plan on eating her eggs. If you could see a vet that might be best.
