Hello Everyone! Thank you for creating a community who love chickens. We just recently expanded our coop after two years, and looking to grow our community of experts as we explore our new journey with new chicks. I’ll use the suggested template to keep me on topic.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We have four beautiful Leghorns, we got them August 2017 from my sister-in-law who raised them as chicks. She had to suddenly move with her now husband when his health changed. The Leghorns have been really great, great layers, but Hubby was aching for new chicks to expand his coop, and he really wants rainbow color eggs.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have about 16 chickens, though by the end of spring that will probably increase.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Leghorns, Wellsummer, Black Australorp, Americanas, New Hampshire Red Delaware, Golden Sex Linked Barred Rock Rohde Island Red...not sure what our new chicks will be.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
The fresh eggs, I honestly can’t go back to store bought eggs. They also each have a personality. But honestly, this was Hubby’s venture and I am just supporting it. Also, it’s so much fun naming them, my son comes up with a lot of names, and we can keep track of the names over hubby any day.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Between the both of us, camping, hiking, Cub Scouts, Racing, Ham Radio. We used to both coach Special Olympics too.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We have a handsome son, who is very active and keeps us busy. He does Cub Scouts and Mixed Martial Arts. I teach Special Ed at his school. His dad works on heavy machinery like tractors or farming machines, and does search and rescue on the side. We have two big dogs, a German Shepard/Golden Retriever & a German Shepard Malemute. My husband hopes to get goats, a pig and a cow if we ever move out of city limits.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
One of our chicks might be a rooster, and I came across an article about our Wellsummers. Also, when I google some of the questions, the site kept popping up. We already are in some Facebook Communities, but this site also looked helpful.
