(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?I would say I’m not new to chickens per se as my family had them when I was a kid but I carry deep trauma from it. My step dad allowed the roosters to chase me and attack me when I was very small and I’m still terrified of chickens. My adult brain knows that roosters and chickens are not the same but it’s still an irrational fear. My quest for a backyard flock is one to break my fear and educate my children while feeding my family. I breed exotic birds. If I can handle a macaw nite I can handle a measly rooster for goodness sakes 🙄

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?Right now I’m in the planning stage no chickens yet

(3) What breeds do you have?N/A
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? I’m looking forward to a project I can do with my kids we are going to raise from eggs so the kids can see where their food comes from

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?im an exotic bird breeder, in also a crafter

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I have 2 Daniffs one is my service dog and several breeder bird of various species

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D I found BYC at the recommendation of a hatching egg group on MeWe when I was asking advice on chicken breeds

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
It might help you completely overcome your fears if you raise them from chicks. Have you considered just purchasing sexed chicks vs incubating? When you incubate you will get males and you will need to deal with them in one way or another. Unless that is part of the lesson you wish to teach your kids. "This is where chicken meat comes from."

We discussed either using them as meat at that point or adding them to a country friends flock as he enjoys roosters. I’m hoping bonding with the birds as babies will help as I enjoy the process of incubation and hatching so much

Your memories haunt you, not because of attacking roosters, or chickens. You need to forgive yourself for other people, like your father, failing to protect you. The world is cruel, but that doesn't mean you have to be a link in that chain. Break the chains. Forgive people who you know don't deserve forgiveness. And start enjoying life again!

And chickens don't hurt!
