Hello All!

Wanted to tell you I love this website! I have learned so much about chickens.

The kids wanted to have pet chickens, but I was unsure about care, cost, etc. I think after visiting this site and speaking to people that used to have chickens, I am hooked!

Now the only thing is the coop. My DH said he would build one, but I do not want to have a huge investment of money in something the kids may loose interest in.

I also am not sure of the size of it. If they get hooked on the chickens then it is a possibility we would expand the flock and then would need to expand the coop.

I am confused about that? Any advice from you all would be appreciated.

Thanks again for this great site!

Hey Philly, I am just outside of philly and was a city girl who married a country boy. (Hence my screen name!

We started this for the kids, but the addiction got me instead!! As the primary person who tended the babies, it wasn't hard for me to get hooked! Build your coop bigger than you think you need! I went from 3 to 23 chickens in a fairly short time! We built the first coop for three and are now on coop number two. Go through the coop designs on the building your coop thread. There is everything there from a tiny three en tractor to huge coops! The people on here will offer you great advice and support!

My advise i to build the coop as big as you feasably can. If the kids don't catch the addiction SOMEONE in your family WILL. It is a matter of playing the odds - most people just can't fight the urge to have, hatch, buy , and keep more chickens. Soon as I think I have all the sweet girls I need someone posts a pic of a breed or cross I haven't seen before. Now hubby ( who put me on chicken buying restriction ) has offered to make me a homemade incubator from an old mini fridge we have in the garage. I can't guy anymore, but he would let me hatch em now - guess he figures it's less expensive. Guess he figures I will wait and hatch out my own babies from our pullets who will be laying in the next month or so - he didn't figure that I could order hatching eggs, lol! MWUAHAHAHAHA

Welcome from Illinois. I would say build bigger, you'll have more chickens before long. I started with 8, now have 33. The addiction has taken over...
