I have decided to raise chickens for pets and for the eggs. I have no experience!! I have researched like crazy!!! Found this site and LOVE it!!! I need to have quiet friendly hens, i live in a subdivision and I'm really not allowed but no one enforces the rule so I feel It"ll be OK. I have bought 2 black Australorp, 1 buff orpington, and 1 Dominique. I would like 1 to 2 more but I can't locate what I want. I bought all but the Domininque at a big Francis type store. The guy there said all the chicks are sexed as pullets. I have talked to some feed stores since and they said there is no telling, so I'm soooo scared I'll have some roosters!!!!! I went to a big time hillbilly feed store yesterday for my Dominique and the guy there said it's easy to tell ,you pull their wing out and if the feathers follow perfectly from secondary to primary than it"s a pullet. If the primary are long then dip down to shorter secondary, then it's a rooster. He had all different types of chicks but everyone he checked was a rooster.( days old chicks). I found it hard to believe that out of say 30 chicks he only had one pullet. (he checked them in front of me) If he"s right then one of my Australorps is a rooster. The crazy thing is out of all my chicks that Australorp I was sure a pullet cause it is very shy and isn't progressing as fast as the others. I"m not sure if I can trust that guy. I have read every site I could find on sexing chickens and none say what that guy told me??? I will be VERY upset if after months of caring for these chicks they end up roosters!!! Just 4 days with them me and my kids are in love.. I'm tempted to buy 3 more than wanting just in case.. Well that's my frustration right now. That and trying to find the breeds I want. I'd like a Americana, Brahma, Holland or Silkie( my husband wants the hens with high egg production but the silkie looks sooo cute )My husband has their coop halfway done. Anything anyone feels I need to know as a newbie please let me know..

Now as to feather sexing chicks...
This method used to determine the sex of newly hatched chicks is only possible if a female from a slow-feathering breed is crossed with a male from a fast-feathering breed. The sex of the chicks produced from this cross can be determined during the first 48 hours after hatching by looking at the primary and secondary feathers located on the chick's wings. The primary feathers will be noticeably longer than the secondary feathers on a female chick. On a male, the primary and secondary feathers are the same length.
Cackle hatchery has a small order pullet special....

Welcome.
I don't think I would trust that guy either. As to the group that was sexed from the feed store, they are usually 97% accurate but never claim to be 100%. A friend of mine bought some chicks from the feed bin that were sexed and his has all turned out pullets, so I have my fingers crossed for you. They just cost a bit more than the straight run.
