Hello
I've been a 'silent' member here for quite a while, picking up tips for keeping chickens as pets, and have finally got 3 chickens that are ex-commercial layers, so they are about 18 months old. Also have a buff turkey and "should" have 2 hen turkeys .... they managed to burst out of their pen 3 hours after we got them and are now dancing round the neighbours' paddocks resisting all efforts to capture them.
My husband and I are both retired, we have 2 adult sons and a gorgeous granddaughter who was a year old last week. We also have 5 ex-pound/shelter dogs and 2 cats (can you tell I worked in the world of animal rescue??)
I am Irish, my husband is Scottish and we emigrated from Edinburgh, Scotland, to New Zealand in 2005.
I found BackyardChickens while researching keeping poultry as pets, and found it to be a real fountain of knowledge.

The 2 girls have come back onto our property and I've been tossing food to them. Meanwhile, Albert is strutting his stuff in the (newly strengthened) pen to entice them to stay ......
