Just wanted to stop in and introduce myself. I live north of Panama City, Florida and we are chicken owners. My wife is not the biggest fan but myself and the two daughters, ages 6 and 9, are really enjoying our first birds. We got the vast majority of the information we needed from this site prior to getting the birds and now we are clearly "hooked" so to speak.

It started when the daughter's class had 20 eggs in an incubator for a classroom project at school. Both girls started in on me about wanting chickens and the wife was not a fan. I told the girls that they did not know what they were getting into and that they needed more information. I made the 9 y.o. do research and write a report on pertinent information about chickens and what we really needed to know about them. I insisted that if she were going to get into a hobby or animals that she should know all of the available information about them. She spent three afternoons researching until she had three pages of info on chickens. I did try to help her and pointed her to this site. (Daddy had been doing a lot more research himself to make sure he knew what he needed to know).

I convinced the wife that they would not be as much work as most other pets and she relented and said we could get a few as long as they laid eggs. You know, we have to get something out of them. So, I bought ten week old chicks from a local girl who is addicted to hatching but does not want the chickens. We lost five of the first ten and the rest are doing well. I believe we learned from our mistakes. I ordered 30 more birds this morning from Cackle and expect them in a few weeks.

I would like to thank all of you for the great info on these boards and I am sure that many of you know that a lot of people read who never post. I am one of those.

O look forward to years of being a chick-a-holic with you guys on these boards.
