We live in a suburban neighborhood, but I'm trying to live my farmer dreams. Three months ago, on "chick day" at our local feed store, we bought four chicks. After just three days one died and after several months we re-homed one that seemed roosterish. Then we added one more to our tiny flock. How's that for a math word problem?
Now we have three chickens - a barred rock named Zeke, an ameraucana (easter egger?) named Flo, and an olive egger named Lucy. After a very slow start, Flo is the biggest and is getting more and more beautiful. I'm afraid she may be a he that will need a new home.
Every time I've researched a question I've ended up at BYC. The site is so informative and the forum responses are so supportive and helpful. I finally decided to join instead of just lurking
Even if I never get any eggs, I'm having so much fun! Our chickens are free range in our back yard and they're a hoot to watch. Sometimes they try to come in the house! At night they put themselves to bed in their coop. All I have to do is shut the door.
Soon I will post a picture of Flo to get guesses as to gender. I think "she's" a rooster for sure, but my husband is in denial.
Thank you BYC for all your information!
