Hi all! I'm a newbie chicken mama in Tallahassee, FL! I'm research faculty at Florida State in the day, and well, now a chicken mama in the afternoons/evenings/weekends. I'm a yankee (Wilmington, DE) transplanted to the south 15 years ago...each year I find myself doing more and more southern not-city-folk stuff. This year, it's chickens. Hubby thinks I'm crazy, my 3 year probably thinks I'm mom-of-the-year for his chickens. We (son and I) purchased 6 chicks on Friday from The Feed Store in Havana - 2 Jersey Giants, 2 Brahmans, and 2 Production Reds. Right now they're brooding in an old dog crate/carrier and seem to be happy. I'm making a coop/run out of pallets. I'm doing this as cheep (intended) as possible so I'm not following a specific pallet building plan, just getting lots of inspiration from here and pinterest.
The brooder is now securely located in his old playhouse with a real feeder and waterer and red heat lamp. But this is Wim cheesing it up with his chicks!
