Hi! I'm a new member hoping to learn about keeping geese. I have a farm with horses, dogs, and cats. Im pretty much out in the country, with no close neigjbors. There is a farm pond with fence around it - maybe a half acre of pond plus grass - right behind my house. I'd like to possibly get some waterfowl for it, thinking geese. What can other members tell me to help guide me? As I said, I'm really a newbie, don't know anything about keeping geese, but I'm a quick learner! :)

Welcome to BYC!

I honestly have to say I respect anyone that wants to do waterfowl for starting out, especially geese. I didn't start liking geese until this year.

David Holderead has some really nice geese breeds available and he has information about geese available that you could look at if you didn't purchase from there for whatever reason.
Metzer farms also is a great place to look around in they have geese breeds and they have ducks.
Backyard chickens is also a good place to get information especially from the forums, learning center, and reviews.

I was reading in a book (about sheep and most other livestock) that an alternative to larger guardian animal geese can make great ones to protect a sheep flock, I didn't think you were interested in sheep but learning about the goose reminded me of how great a reputation they are as guard animals.

Hello :frow and welcome to BYC!

I'm not familiar with geese, good luck.

Thanks, everyone. The links have been helpful, and I'm learning a lot. :) The more i read, the more I think my place will be ideal for geese, because the pond is right behind the house, close, but fenced off from the rest of the yard. So no poop in the yard. :) Theres plenty of grass for them to munch on. And I have several barns/outbuildings that could be used. I like what I've learned about geese being good guard dogs, too!
