Hello, My name is Ellen and I am completely new to learning about having chickens!

I live in Miami at the moment, but am planning to move to Central Fl so that we can buy a home with approx 2 acres. I have some friends that live in the Redland area here in Miami and they have shown me their coops and chickens etc. I am really looking forward to it. We are unable to afford purchasing our home in the Redland area which is why we are planning a move to Central Fl.

I am very interested in having chickens, but it seems to be a web of confusion as to where you can live and have roosters as well. I definitely want a rooster! Is anyone here familiar with Central Fl? We would want to be within an hours drive (or less, factoring in traffic) of downtown Orlando as that is where my husband would work. I have gone to the laws and ordinances page, but I am still awfully confused :0! If anyone here is familiar with the laws in central fl I would so appreciate some ideas of where to look for a home.

We would like rural, where no one cares if you have gardens, chickens, dogs etc. Money is definitely an object! We hope to keep it in the under 300,000 range. This is a wonderful site, enjoying reading and learning here!
Thank you so much! Ellen

Hi Ellen, nice to meet you. Glad you joined us at Backyard chickens

. I think your best bet would be to post on the Florida state thread. Put that in the search box and it will pop up. Other Floridians may know the restrictions or rally round you to help get them changed. I hope you will be successful in finding a suitable home within your needs.

If you use this link it will take you to other threads based out of Central Florida: https://www.backyardchickens.com/newsearch?search=central+florida

Just keep in mind, that even if a neighbor can have them, it does not automatically mean you can have them. It may depend on your lot size, how your property is zoned, etc., etc. Sometimes the best way to find out is to call your local township/government office and ask them about the area and then the specific home (ince you have a property in mind). Sometimes you can also find the information by searching "_______ (fill in your township and maybe county) township ordinances", but like you said, that can be very confusing.

Either way, it is best to find out now than after you get your chickens. Good luck!

Hi Ellen, welcome to BYC!

Always good to have another Floridian here!

My husband and I used to live in Key West so I perfectly understand the reasons why you are interested in moving to a more rural, affordable location. We're in the country between Gainesville and St. Augustine so you would want to be south of us; there are some really nice areas that will give you the space you want maybe to the west of Orlando. There are a lot of members on the FL state thread and some of them might have ideas on the locations you are considering and the laws that would apply. Here's our state thread:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/305793/florida-always-sunny-side-up

You can also find out things on the state thread like where breeders are in your new area, recommendations on breeds suited to our climate, swap meets, etc.

Good luck to you with all your plans and relocating. I look forward to seeing you around!
