Hi there, I'm Jes, new here, and new to chickens. A little background before we get to my concerns. Tuesday (1 day old) my family and I became the proud "parents" of four ridiculously cute and fuzzy chicks from MPC. All chicks arrived alive and full of spunk and even seemed to already have a pecking order. They were also extremely easy to identify. (2 easter eggers, 1 silver lace cochin, 1 silver cuckoo marans). Our mail lady even brought them directly to the house, and delivered our mail before starting her normal route so the chicks wouldn't overheat in the back of her truck. (Truly impressed with my local USPS service).

Chicks went straight into the brooder that was set up 48 hours ahead of time and complete with red heat light, fresh food and fresh water (with acv). Each of them took to the food and learned how to use the nipple waterer immediately. (I'm still impressed at how quickly they picked up on the nipple). They took quickly to being held and will fall asleep while being snuggled, and enjoy chasing a laser pointer dot (totally hilarious). One of my easter eggers even cheeps loudly when she wants attention. We all swarm around the brooder watching them all day. (Plus side, we are watching less tv!)

Now onto my concerns: Let me just state that I KNOW that newborn chicks sleep a lot, just like any other baby, but one of our easter eggers sleeps ALL THE TIME. Like a noticeable difference from the others. I have seen her getting up to eat/drink/poo, she walks and carries herself normally, no injuries/no physical deformities, and is breathing normally. She doesn't get picked on any more than the others, but she is the only one who still has her egg tooth (at 4 days old). The brooder is the perfect temperature (they are all over the brooder, go under the lamp when they want to warm up, but eagerly explore every other inch of it - not huddled together & not panting trying to escape the heat). The other 3 have typical cycles of sleep, peck/scratch/explore/play, eat, poo, repeat and are generally quite active. None of them are overly loud (or quiet) and I have been keeping an eye out for "pasty butts", but everyone has been free and clear of poo build up. This one chick just seems to sleep and sleep and sleep some more.

Last night (3 days old) I removed the paper towels from over the pine shavings and introduced a shallow dish of grit for eating/scratching/dust bathing in and today (4 days old) I took them out into the yard (it's in the upper 90's here) where they all had a blast pecking and scratching for little teeny bugs and eating little bites of grass for about 10-15 minutes. (Our cochin was the most excited about the grass, and was digging and rolling around like a cat with catnip. It was incredibly funny). But sleepy head still SLEPT THE ENTIRE TIME! I was able to get her to walk/run from myself to my son once or twice and she did peck at the ground/bugs/plants a few times, but the rest of the time she just laid down and slept through their adventure.

Do I have any reason to be concerned or do I just have a late bloomer/lazy chick?

First, it does sound like you're taking good care of them. You will probably find they don't need as much heat as "the book" says, especially after they are a few days older and recovered from shipping. You may just have a slow starter, one who was particularly stressed, and she will recover and be fine. Or it could go the other way. Somtetimes things just happen, unfortunately. Sometimes there is an intrnal defect of some sort. You could try taking her aside a couple of times a day and giving her a little water and some mostened chick feed, just in case she isn't getting as much as she needs. In the sticky on this forum is a very good article about some of the causes of early chick mortality. I hope this goes well for you!

And welcome to our forum!

Welcome to BYC! I have a few questions. Does the sleepy head have good poos? Our 3 day old chick was doing the same thing. Usually, as long as the chicken can eat by itself, drink by itself, stand up without wobbling, and keep its head up, it's OK. If the poos are loose, don't feed that much sugar water or bananas. You can resort to putting electrolytes in the water. If it continues try scrambling eggs and mashing it up in water then feed it through a syringe. If you have any grasshoppers, take them and feed the little ones to her.

Hope she's okay!

If it seems to have a poop problem try a little plain yogurt and see if it helps. Some say to add a little ACV to the water also. Unfortunatley Flockwatcher is right about some just not making it. The first week usually tells. We are rooting for the little one though.

Thank you everyone. We already add acv to water and other than my two crazy energetic chicks having pasty butts this morning (I don't think they got the memo about the grit - they seem to have caught on to it since "the great bum wash" this morning though), everyone's poos seem normal comparing them to photos of healthy poo from this site that I found on another thread http://chat.allotment.org/index.php?topic=17568.0%3Cbr%3E%3Cbr%3EMedicated.

Last night (4 days old) I syringe fed Sleepy Chick some softened chick starter and water. She did eat/peck at it a few times but didn't perk up much. This morning (5 days old) she is totally lethargic, seems dehydrated (skin stays "smooshed" when you touch her) and I can quite literally put her in any position and she won't fuss or try to right herself. I did give her water and feed her (and the others) some yogurt this morning but again she didn't perk up at all. She even slept through me running the vacuum. The others stood at the side of the brooder watching/chasing/yelling at it when I went by (they are currently in my living room), but Sleepy Chick barely flinched and stayed laying down.

I'm keeping an eye on her and will continue pulling her out to try and feed/water through out the day, but unfortunately I think Sleepy Chick has taken a turn for the worst and I will be surprised if she makes it through the next 24 hours.

UPDATE:

Last night (5 days old) we lost Sleepy Chick (an EE) and unexpectedly our other EE as well. (I did notice that the other EE was lethargic and cheeping less yesterday evening - she was our loud mouth).

And of course this is after mypetchicken's 48 hour death policy (even though I am still going to send them an email). So we went from a flock of 4 to a flock of two (do two chicks even qualify as a flock?) within 4 days of their arrival.

The other two, our Silver Lace Cochin and Silver Cuckoo Marans are doing fine. Both are cheeping, running around, pooing a nice brown/white/green. Now I'm paranoid and watching their every move and worry every time they are napping/not cheeping. This morning (6 days old) I deep cleaned the brooder and everything in it, just as a precaution, though if it was an illness they've already been exposed to it.
