Newbie needing help with breed and sex

Hi all,
I'm new to this sight and new to owning chickens. I was hoping someone could tell me the breed and possibly sex of my 8 week old birds. They were given to me at 4 days old. I'm really hoping they are not roosters as Ive grown quite attached.

At 8 weeks old? That one looks rather like a cockerel. Could be a Jersey Giant or Australorp. Do you have any pictures of the others?

any chance they could be a 'quiet' breed?

Your black girl looks like an Australorp to me. I'm not sure about the white one. If you'd like the more opinions, you can post photos here:

Can't say I know about the breed of this guy - he looks rather like a Cornish Cross, but at 8 weeks, he'd be the size of a house, so no dice. And yes, I did say he. Sorry.

Australorps and Jersey Giants aren't really considered quiet. I don't know about the frequency of their crowing, but I do know that big birds like them can get loud, loud, loud.

Welcome to BYC! I'm glad you joined us! The first is a Black Australorp cockerel.

I agree on the black being a cockerel. The one white (when picture is enlarged) has rough/wild looking feathers - it made me think Cornish x (meatbird.) they generally eat, eat eat, and don't do much chicken stuff like preening feathers etc. So that's my determination. Take it for what it is worth. You can also post at "what breed or gender is this." It's important to list age at time of photo.
