Hi all,
Getting into quail. I have had 3 for a while now (Bobwhite). Looking to learn and expand. I have 3 in a pigeon coop but am currently building something bigger. 4 x 5 house with a 4 x 8 long run. Hope to keep about a dozen quail. I have 1 male 2 females with one that lays. Hope to eventually have bobs and valley.
With building something new am wondering about height. I know they can rush up and break necks but I want to be able to clean without bending over much. Thinking about 6' tall. Using hardware cloth instead of chicken wire (we do have fox around here). I want it large like a chicken pen but keep quail. I want to put down landscape fabric and then cover with shavings (Pine). I also want to plant inside the run in containers. I want it to be a pretty landscaped area yet house birds also. I am using the little tykes log cabin for thier housing raising the height by mounting on 2 x 10 frame and placing this aviary next to my green house.
So my list of questions are:
Are 2 x 4 the best for framing? Along the bottom of the run I will be using 2 x 10 or would 2 x 2 work for the rest?
Is 5' to 6' tall ok.
I am not insulating at this point but do I need to worry about that? I am in the Willamette Valley in Oregon. I think we have mild weather overall. If we did have a really cold snap I could supply straw or hay. I have designed so half the roof can come off and I have made a screen roof for summer heat.
Any links or hot spots where I should look to get appropriate info?
thanks
