Newbie question

It means to kill the chicken. Usually because of disease, deformity, or behavioral probems.

Sadly, it means when you have to dispose of one of your chickens due to illness, bad disposition, etc. Unfortunately, this is sometimes necessary.

Morbid follow up: How do you do that?

I can't ever imagine myself killing a baby chick.

Search BYC. Lots of good ideas.

Sometimes it is necessary to prevent the spread of illness or the chick from living in severe pain.

If you keep animals you have to accept that sometimes you need to end their lives. None of us like or enjoy this but we would not be responsible owners if we could not contemplate this prospect. A dog or cat we take to the vet but our chickens we need to cull ourselves - my husband is a shooting man so is fairly used to this and he performs the task when necessary, thankfully!

I don't even have my chicks yet. They should be here next week. I am trying to educate myself.

Hubby and I don't know how or if we could kill it. I guess if it were suffering, it would make it a little easier. But how is it done?

i'm new too and my husband had to kill our favorite rooster. It was so sad and we didn't sleep well for nights afterwards, but brewster just got too brave and flew over the fence into the backyard where our dogs were and they just didn't know any better and jumped right on him. We were right there and immediately went in and got him but it was too late he was suffering way too much. It was a hard call but it had to be done. We got past it and if you have to you can too.
