Hello and welcome to BYC! :welcome
How many chickens are you planning to get? What do you want your chickens for?
To get your coop ready all you really need is pine shavings. Do you mind sharing pics of your coop inside and out?

When you say "coop ready," are you asking about adult birds or just chickens old enough to be outside? Hatcheries that do sell coop-ready birds charge a lot. My first birds came from a 4-H kid who had raised them for the county fair, and all four were already laying. They were a bargain at $5 each.

What type of chicken depends on what you want. Eggs, meat or both? Docile, friendly pets? Beautiful feathering? Heavy girls who won't fly over fencing (my preference)? Birds that thrive in confinement or those who yearn to free range? Do you need them to be especially heat tolerant?

As someone who has at least a dozen books on chickens and access to all the knowledge of BYC, I can assure you that I -- too often -- have ignored my own advice and simply chosen birds whose looks struck my fancy. I swear my two Easter Eggers stared at me from a brooder until I agreed to take them home. They totally violate my rule about not getting birds that sail over fencing, and I still love them.

Welcome to BYC, and let us know when you get your birds!
