Hello ye all chicks lovers! I'm new to raising any kind of animal in my backyard. Plan to get a coop n 3 chickens to lay eggs for my family. This site has loads of valuable info!

I live in San Jose Ca. We have neighbors living 25ft away so need to find "quiet" chickens that can provide 45-50 eggs every month. Any suggestion of breed would be very much appreciated. thx!

Really can't guarantee any breeds will be quiet, especially when you want good layers. Hens tend to sound the "egg song" whether they have laid or not. Are they restrictions in your town, that say a coop must be a certain distance from the neighbors property line?

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Here are a couple of links to some nice chicken breed comparison charts you might like http://www.sagehenfarmlodi.com/chooks/chooks.html and http://www.albc-usa.org/documents/chickenbreedcomparison.pdf when you have narrowed down your choices, don't forget to check the BYC Reviews section for member reviews on the different breeds.

X3, all chickens will make some noise, but the heavy breeds (usually brown or colored egg layers) tend to be quieter/calmer than the light breeds (usually white egg layers).
For egg numbers alone, the Red Sex Links (Golden Comet, Red Stars, ISA Browns etc) for brown eggs are probably the most popular layers around. If you want breeds that don't lay quite as well but will lay for a longer time, Orpingtons (lots of people really like these, great pets though broody), Australorps, Plymouth Rocks, Sussex, Delaware and Wyandottes are some other popular breeds that are usually pretty easy to get along with, they all lay different shades of brown eggs. If you like colorful eggs, the Easter Egger, often sold as Ameraucana by hatcheries, are a fun breed because they usually lay green/blue eggs, and they tend to be very nice birds, and then there are the Welsummer and Marans for those dark brown eggs... have fun deciding!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. I've raised dozens of breeds over the past 50 years, and as drumstick diva said, all hens are going to sing the "egg song." However the quietest breeds (as chickens go) that I've had have been Silkies, Brahmas, Australorps, and Orpingtons. If egg production is a priority, Australorps are the best layers on this list. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breed you decide to get, good luck with your flocks.
