Well, guess it's time to stop lurking and get with the program. I'm new to chickens and got my first chicks last weekend. Finished the coop and run on Friday and got the ladies on Sat. They are 10 weeks old. I have five hens (hopefully) and the breeds are: 1 barred rock, 2 buff orpingtons and 2 australorps. So far they've learned how to use the water nipples and will eat scratch out of my hand. They finally went in to their coop last night by themselves after I used the light trick I read about here. I've got the automatic ador pop door and it works great.I found out about BYC when I did a search when I was first getting interested in chickens. I read for three months before I started building. I converted an old play fort that I had built for my youngest son. I would have saved money and time if I had just torn the fort down and started from scratch!! I'm married and have three grown kids and three grandkids. Grandkids will get to meet the ladies for the first time tomorrow
. In case anyone was wondering, we live smack dab in the middle of a subdivision! I've let the yellowbells grow high so noone can see in the backyard
The area we live in is unincorporated and near as I can find out, we can have up to 20 chickens but no roos. Right now 5 is a gracious plenty. Sorry for the length. Bye.
