I just started my flock with 2 black marans, a buff orpington, an Americauna, and a barred rock. I rescue parrots, so birds are not new to me, but learning about chickens and their differences has been fun.

I adore my little flock, who have rid my yard of ticks, that were about to take over. They free range our 1.6 acres during the day and come running if they think I have treats.

Would not mind adding some more, cause I just love them. Oh, I named 4 of them after long past relatives.

Welcome to BYC! I agree with Mountain Peeps. Buff Orpingtons are a great breed; very calm and gentle. I have four of them myself in my flock. I also like the chocolate eggs of the Marans. It's great having a tick free yard. Just be careful not to fall prey to chicken math. :o) Good luck with your flock.

I figured that's what chicken math was. I thought when I brought these 5 girls home, as least one wouldn't make it. They all did. No rooster, yet. I think if he got a greasing with my dogs, they'd kill him, so starting with the girls for the eggs and bug eating.
The house I bought last year is loaded with brown recluse, so hoping they'll find the ones outside. They love the wolf spiders.
I have more fun watching them in the yard, from the pool. They look like a search party, all on their own section, as they scour the 6 and for food.

Welcome - there is some variation to chicken match rules ie; if you get a roo replace him with 2(pullets).

Bantams only count as half a chicken - in some parts of USA they are considered 1/3 of a chicken since 3 of their eggs makes 1 regular size egg.

Free chickens never count. Incidentally some chickens make great house pets - so there goes your in -the- house spiders.

Okay, I think we're done here

Everyone says I should let the chickens in. May get a silkie or two for indoors, but have to make sure my parrots can't get anything from them. Thoughts on "indoor chickens"

Needed to share my little flock. They are a close-knit bunch and for a supposed "non-agressive" bird, my buff orpington rules the roost.
