Dreams do come true. My family moved to the city life when I was 12 & now 40+ years; 5 kids & 19 grandchildren later, I have finally made it back to the country where I belong. At this time I have a big coop out in the paddock housing 5 shavers (ex-battery hens) & Blu the roo...hes just about a teenager now. By the house we have 10 Bantys - 2 of them are Frizzles - BuckBuck & Petal. Petal has been laying for 2 months & decided a couple of days ago that shes gonna be a mama so because it's her first time, I've removed all but 4 eggs. We got 5 weaner pigs & now 5 months later they are huge. It's been 6 months of pure happiness & I feel like I'm on an adventure everyday. Can't wait to get my "meat chooks" next & then perhaps 4 sheep. For me personally, any named animal will never see the pot. Those that don't get 'name's will be grown for food. Somehow 2 of the pigs (a male & a female) have ended up with a name but I didn't do it lol so we will just have to wait & see what happens. I visit Backyard chickens nearly everyday & thanx to the forums, I have learned lots & have found answers to many many questions. I think it's because of this, my journey into small homesteading has been smooth & reasonably stress free so thank you all for sharing your knowledge. That's all from me for now. Wishing everyone a great day...Raye

Welcome to BYC from middle Tennessee:frow After living most of our adult lives overseas, we spent 20 years in the DC area... And finally we are now in the county starting our homestead adventure. We've been at it a year. Last year we put 820+ pounds of chicken in the freezer and this spring we put another 100 pounds of roos, and toms in the freezer. We did not plan on becoming breeders when we started this adventure--but wanting to work with heritage breeds and save the genetics of those endangered forced us into it. None-the-less its been a great adventure.:ya
