My hen has been on 2 eggs for 16 days now... while we were on vacation for 3 days she gathered a few other hens eggs, so those eggs have only been sat on for 13-14 days. A total of 7 eggs. Anyways... I caught her off the nest today so I went to check them out.... I picked up one of them and noticed its sloshy sounding--I wasn't even shaking it, only moving it to my hear to listen. Does that mean thats a dud? There was another that had no slosh sound to it at all.

I worry that she is sitting on unfertalized eggs.... we do have a rooster, but still.... will she eventually get off them if they don't hatch????

Im sorry-Im new to all this!

If it sloshed, carefully put it into a plastic bag and dispose of it without it breaking. It's a dud.

I have a hen who is broody lately and trying hard to hatch an unfertilized egg. Don't know how to get her to free range in the yard lately because most of the time she wants to sit on her egg.

If the 2 16-day eggs hatch, then she might want to leave the nest to take care of those chicks before the others are ready to hatch. You'll want to be ready to either put the late-comers in an incubator, or steal away the early guys until the rest hatch, so that she won't abandon them at the most crucial moment.

If they don't hatch, she will probably eventually get off the nest, but she may need some convincing.

oh, I don't have an incubator...nor the means to buy one.
