Hello all BYC'ers

I have 19 chicks in a brooder in the garage and 6 hens out in a coop large enough for 30. We have a fenced in run, a fenced and netted grazing area, (nets are for the hawks), and 3 + acres for them all to free range. Its going well.

I would like to ask if anyone could identify this yellow chick in the picture. I bought two of these yellow chicks when I bought the others a month ago. These two chicks are easily 3 or 4 times the size of the other chicks. I was told they are "not layers". As a newbie to chickens in general, I bought them because they were cute. They are far FAR from cute now. They are so big and they eat so much food its hard to watch. They seem genetically lazy, and never take more than 3 or 4 steps before they lie down. I raised the feeder so that they couldn't lie down and eat, which was just offensive to watch.

Is this an ugly duckling waiting to become a beautify swan, or is this some abnormality that should be culled from the group?

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

You should post this over in the meat birds section to see if they think it is a meat bird (Cornish cross) - or over in the "What breed or gender is this?" section.

I have never had meaties but have heard that they do eat and eat. Then they die an early death and thus should be eaten very early so they don't suffer. Sorry I don't know by looking at the bird how to tell if it is a meatie.

Hopefully someone over there can tell you.

They yellow guy is a meat bird I have 2 Cornish crosses right know. Sorry but put them on meat bird food and you'll have to butcher them in 6 weeks. If you let them grow up they will die because there legs WILL brake

Thank you that is good information.

I have a bit of a wild run and a high coop that requires some work to get up into. This information is hugely helpful.

Thank you.
