Hi, I'm reading all I can and taking it all in! I want to have three chickens.. Not sure which breed yet, I want hens that are easy to handle, docile and friendly , as well as good layers. I live in the UK and have lots of foxes around, so I'm a bit worried about keeping them safe. Any ideas anyone, on thoroughly fox proofing a coop?

Search the forums and question away when picking your breed of preference. If you have chickens, the predators will come. Solid pens with a sturdy top are the only guarantee against most predators. The coop and run forum has many great ideas. Good luck.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Breeds that have a well deserved reputation for being calm and gentle (potential lap pets) as well as good layers include Australorps, Orpingtons, Brahmas, Sussex, and Faverolles. If heavy egg production is a major priority, Australorps are the very best layers on this list. There is a good article at http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2013/07/11-tips-for-predator-proofing-chickens.html on predator proofing your chickens from foxes and other predators. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breed you decide to get, good luck with your flock.

Invest in good 1/2" hardware cloth instead of flimsy chicken wire - makes a big difference. Fox can climb, jump, dig, you have to prevent intrusion from all angles.
