Hello backyard chicken community. I'm interested in having a few chickens of our own for eggs. We are moving from Wisconsin to Atlanta, GA and finally will have some acreage and city ordinances that allow us to raise chickens. What breeds do you recommend? Any recommended tips for beginners.

Hi and welcome to BYC and congrats on your new hobby. You may wish to consider getting a variety of breeds and see which meet your personal and climatic circumstances the best. These links may be worth a glance:

Hi and Welcome!
Im gonna add my 2 cents here and recommend Easter Eggers! These birds are wonderfully calm and sweet, and are very quirky! I have 5 at the moment, and they are all a joy! lots of different colors and variety in plumage and of course their beards and muffs make them wonderfully unique. oh yea and they lay eggs anywhere from a light blue to a nice green! Mine lay an egg almost everyday!
enjoy the your new flock!

Hello and welcome! :celebrate:welcome:jumpy:jumpy:jumpy

If you want good layers I would recommend Rhode Island reds they are also very tame and the roosters are too!

Good egg layers (ideas)
-Barred rock/Plymouth rock
-Leghorns (danish brown, white)
-Sussex are real pretty
-Buff Orpington are so cute!

Good luck feel free to ask any questions or concerns about anything! :thumbsup

Thank you for the guidance! I do know I won't be allowed to have any roosters. I love the look of buff orpington! And have heard they are pretty easy going and docile (I have three children that love to pet and touch animals and trying to find a breed that would tolerate that). Do you find them to be too noisy?
