New to BYC. I currently have 9 barred rock chicks who are a week old. We are starting our coop build this weekend. This is my first flock and loving every minute of it. We are in Sacramento, CA and cant wait to gain some new/useful info. Thank you for having me.

Hello, and welcome! Good luck with the chick's! If you have any predator's in your area, build to make sure that they won't be able to get your flock.

Briefly, a few of the most important things:
-Predator proofing! Chicken wire isn't predator proof, use hardware cloth instead. Don't forget about digging, climbing, and flying predators! Everything loves to snack on chickens.
-Make sure the birds have enough space (generally at least 4sqft/chicken in the coop and 10sqft/chicken in the run for large fowl). It's always best to build bigger than you think you need!
-Ventilation
-Cleaning (poop management)
-Roost size and location
