Hi! My husband and I are raising 6 Rhode Island Reds we bought at the farm supply store in town. We bought them 8 weeks ago, they started out in a cardboard box in my kitchen with a heat lamp, then my husband built a nice covered pen for them (still kept them in the kitchen-it was a longer than normal winter in Kansas). We moved them outside 3 weeks ago, but still in their little pen on a table on the deck. Today we moved them to their coop. This is our second try at raising chickens, we had 6 adult chickens all different ages I guess and they would peck at each other and I've read since then that's not a good idea to buy chickens 1 here 2 there like we did because they will peck each other. Live and learn. But then something got into the coop and they started disappearing, we never figured out what it was. So we started over from scratch, 6 chicks all bought at the same time, sister, we've filled in the holes whatever stole the previous chickens dig, added some bricks to discourage new digging, will close the hen house at night now (first year never had any problems leaving it open). I feel a stronger connection with these chick, held them, I was born a city girl but love the country life I've lived the last 22 year, but know little about raising farm animals. I wish there was a 4H program for adult city people who have moved to the country!
