Hi,

After contemplating building a chicken coop for the last three years I finally made the decision to start one in a few days. I ordered 8 layer pullets and should receive them on May 15. I ordered mixed breeds and pullets because I didn't want any roosters to disturb the neighbors. Once the neighbors get used to the hens who knows I may get a rooster. I have two dogs: a germen shepherd and a cairn terrier so that should be interesting. I found out about this site from a friend that has 50 chickens and she suggested that I check out this site. I also looked at the chicken coop designs on this website and that is what I will be relying on to build my coop.

Thanks so much for all the good information on this site. Greatly appreciated.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Sounds like you are well on your way to a yard full of chickens!! Please be very careful with your dogs. Most dogs, no matter how sweet they are, see chickens as dinner. There are so many threads in our emergency section on how my dog ate my chickens. So be aware of this. You may need to keep the chickens in a run at all times or keep the dogs in a run while the chickens are out free ranging.

Enjoy this new journey you are on! If you have any questions, feel free to ask around in the forums.

Welcome to our flock!
