Hi all, my name is Andrea, I have a small backyard flock with a silkie (mix?) rooster and two silkie hens; one of which is currently on an clutch of 8.

My flock started with my roo who came from a local zoo where I used to work. Once he matured, they had to rehome him, as he was escaping at terrorizing children, so I brought his hateful butt home to live with me. He's still mean as a snake but I love him anyway, and he's great with his ladies.

I'm hear to learn (specifically about raising these new babies that are hatching as I type) and to share any knowledge that I might have.

If the "mean as a snake" roo is the dad, do you really want to hatch his progeny? Enough bad roosters in the world. He may be good to his hens but, that's like saying "AL CAPONE, was good to his mother."

He's territorial like most roosters; he's got an attitude, for sure; he's easier to handle than any of my girls and has a fantastic personality when it comes to people he knows, but, he can be perceived as "mean" by people whom he does not know. By saying he's good to his girls, I mean that he is protective of them, as he should be, and I'm confident that he will take care of them and his offspring (which I DO want to hatch). A rooster's place, in addition to genetic donation, is to act as a protector of his flock and territory, and he's good at it, so why not breed a rooster that defines its role?
And might I add, it leaves a certain impression of the site that one of first responses I get is judgement. I had hoped that this would be a forum of assistance and support and not a place to criticize.
